Jason Momoa Explains Why He Turned Down Guardians of the Galaxy
Real Or Not Real?
Turns out Khal Drogo Jason Momoa did audition for Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy, but he turned the role down. And we have Stargate: Atlantis to thank.
Screw you, Stargate:Atlantis.
Playing galactic brawler Drax the Destroyer “didn’t really fit in my time because I’ve done so many things where I don’t say much and I’m colored up and I have my shirt off again,” said Momoa to Zap2it. “I want my children to see their father happy. It’s not that it’s not a good role, it just wasn’t the right thing. I was on Stargate: Atlantis for four years playing a similar character called Ronon, who was an alien who didn’t say much and grunted. I’ve been there and done that, whether people have seen it or not. You want to stretch.”
That’s very respectable, dammit. Another reason you won’t be seeing Momoa on the big screen this summer is that he “made a conscious choice to turn down some movies that were action-based” to leave time in his schedule for Road to Paloma, his directorial debut, in which he plays a Native American biker on the run after he avenges a crime committed against his family.
Yeah, but he’s not avenging his family in space. Aw, hell. Snark aside, those are both good reasons. I can’t stay mad.
Momoa also has good things to say about Drax actor Dave Bautista—“Dave is perfect for that role”—and Chris Pratt, about whom he says:
“One of the funnest auditions I’ve ever done in my life was with him. He’s phenomenal. He’s going to kill it. It’s going to be amazing. It’s a whole Han Solo vibe. It’s going to be a phenomenal movie. I’m glad that he is the lead of that. He’s funny as hell, man. He can improv; he just acts circles around me. It was really, really fantastic.”
Even if Guardians is a no-go, the actor says “there’s definitely some” comic book heroes he’s like to play at some point in the future, but he won’t say which, because “then you’d know.” He also says he wants to do more comedies. I guess Wolves doesn’t count if it looks unintentionally hilarious.
