Jason Momoa Will Write His Own Conan the Barbarian Sequel, Thankyouverymuch
May the Odds Be Ever in Your Favor
Is the pen mightier than the sword? Or just as mighty? Conan the Barbarian star Jason Momoa (also of HBO‘s Game of Thrones) apparently had such a good time playing the titular barbarian that there were more stories to tell in the already-planned sequel, so he’s taken it upon himself to write the screenplay himself. It has yet to be made official that his script will be accepted, but how much are they willing to mess with that guy who likes the fantasy genre because he gets to “rape beautiful women”?
Obviously, an actor writing a script is not unheard of. But, um, what are we to expect from Momoa, who will be a first-time screenwriter for a film in which he played the lead and has a displayed tendency toward verbal diarrhea? What does he really want out of another Conan script that he felt he wasn’t going to get from a more established screenwriter? Crave Online asked him, let’s see what he says (please don’t say “rape,” please don’t say “rape”…):
It’s character-adapted, because I really want to get into more of the mythical creatures, you know? … I don’t want to give anything away, but we already have our Conan, really it’s about the villain, what that villain is going to extract from Conan, and where as an actor I want to go with Conan. You know, no one’s going to know what I want to do better than me.
Okay, great! Not totally sure what “character-adapted” means in reference to a screenplay, but sure! We’ll totally go with this. It’s very true that actors can come to know the characters they play very well, but after playing the role, Momoa is hardly going to be able to offer an objective perspective on his character. Will he be taking Conan to places that are unpleasant, humble, or even degrading? Fingers crossed that his intentions go beyond just craving the spotlight and casting himself as a muscle-bound hero with a cool sword (who, ahem, might want to overpower and have his own way with people without their consent) and that he has a deeper, more interesting story in mind.
And as was mentioned before, this script is in no way an official script yet. A sequel to Conan also depends on its success at the box office. But we just hope that Momoa is more thoughtful about his storytelling than he is during panel discussions.
