J.J. Abrams Announces Completed Episode IX Script and Reveals He Really Needed a Drink Before Force Awakens

J.J. Abrams and Stephen Colbert on The Late Show

Recommended Videos

The process of making a Star War can sometimes be a little hectic. For Episode IX, however, things seem to be going a bit more smoothly. Director, producer, and co-writer of the film, J.J. Abrams, was on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to talk about how it’s going, and also about the difference between approaching Star Wars for the first time on The Force Awakens and now. You can watch the full segment above!

Star Wars: Episode IX starts filming at the end of July. Thankfully, Abrams and co-writer Chris Terrio (Argo) have a completed script before shooting! Which is a new thing for Abrams, apparently. Here’s what he had to say:

“We have a script, which is a big deal for me. It starts shooting end of July … Sometimes having the script in advance is something I haven’t always been lucky enough to have … But I’m writing this with Chris Terrio, who’s a genius, and I’m having a great time.”

It is written! The thing that is Episode IX exists and is fully in the world! Yaaaaay! Ahem.

The process on this one already seems way more together than it might have been on the first one. Colbert starts the interview with an anecdote that illustrates this, telling the audience that about two weeks before The Force Awakens was about to open, Abrams was in New York and called Colbert saying, Can I come to your office and just drink? They laugh at the memory.

Colbert continues, “You came to my office and I poured us two glasses of Jameson’s, and you’re like Yeah, I don’t know man. I don’t know...”

Abrams clarifies, “In fairness, I didn’t say ‘Can I come to your office and just drink.’ I said, ‘Can I come to your office and drink.’ Assuming that there’d be good conversation… If it were just drink, that might be a problem.”

Tbh, if I were told I could direct a Star Wars movie, I’d be bathing in rum like a month out.

Star Wars: Episode IX is set to open December 20th, 2019. Plenty of time for all of us to get some drinks in anticipation.
