Joaquin Phoenix Likely Being Considered for Lex Luthor

Well, a Lex Luthor should always have a good sneer.

And according to Variety, we might be seeing that sneer from Joaquin Phoenix. The actor is reportedly being considered for a main villain role in the still untitled film currently known as Batman vs. Superman.

Sources tell Variety that the studio wants the Oscar-nominated actor for a role in the upcoming untitled Batman-Superman pic. However, it’s very early in the process and even if Warners offers Phoenix a role, it’s not clear he would accept as the actor has steered clear of big-budget pics in the past few years, leaning towards movies with a more prestige feel.

Warner Bros. and Phoenix’s representatives did not respond to Variety’s requests for comment. Nor was there any concrete evidence that he’s being considered for Lex Luthor as opposed to Braniac, Metallo, or any other of Superman’s assorted rogues. Lex Luthor having a large role in the movie seems a safe bet for a number of reasons, however. For one, he’s considered Superman’s foe of foes, his motivation for villainy is a belief that Superman doesn’t deserve the worship he gets (an easy position to take after what happened to Metropolis in Superman’s first visit there in Man of Steel), and, well, Lex Luthor and Bruce Wayne move in the same circles. It’s not a stretch to make him a threat to both Batman and Superman.

Everything’s still pretty sketchy at this point, in more ways than, one, so what would you guys think of noted vegan and activist Joaquin Phoenix as one of comics’ most capitalist supervillains?
