Jodie Foster Fronting Female-Centered Mob Drama Angie’s Body

Showtime is saying goodbye to two of its female-headed shows soon; Weeds airs the end of its eight season run this September, and The Big C will end with four hour-long episodes next year. The network won’t be completely bereft of shows with women in the lead role, however; Jodie Foster is developing a show that kind of sounds like the female Sopranos

Foster, who won an Oscar for her role in Silence of the Lambs, will be directing and executive producing Angie’s Body, the premise of which revolves around a woman who heads up her family’s crime syndicate.

Foster will be joined by Heroes and Jericho writer Rob Fresco, who will be co-executive producing and writing the project.

This isn’t the first time Foster’s worked with Showtime; she directed the TV movie The Baby Dance–which starred Stockard Channing and Laura Dern–in 1998.

News of this new project comes after Foster’s hints that she’s be interested in working on something for cable.

“What I do are personal stories and, in some ways, usually involve family and they have equal amounts of comedy and drama, sometimes an absurdist twist, and they’re very verbal,” she told the AP. “And I like constructing complex characters and hopefully seeing this sort of tapestry of how they interact with each other over time evolve. Well, TV’s the place for that.”

Sounds like a perfect fit for Showtime to us.

It’d be difficult for any show to match the mastery and television renaissance that Sopranos helped spark. The project begs for comparison in its current state (in that we know nothing about it but the premise), whether it wants to or not. And in fact, the show’s still in the development stages; who knows if it will even make it to series. For now, though, we’re intrigued enough with the idea that we’ll definitely be following this one, just to see how they handle the material.
