Let John Oliver Fill You in on British Politics, Because the World Is Falling Apart
While we in the United States have been dealing with an extremely, relentlessly unusual political moment, we’re not exactly alone. The UK has been dealing with the fallout of 2016’s “Brexit” referendum for a while, which was their very own case in which the accepted wisdom on the outcome—that the UK would vote to remain in the European Union rather than separate from it—was not what actually happened.
That’s led to a strange political time in the UK as well, including their recent “snap” election, which was called by Prime Minister Theresa May, essentially in order to prove how much support she had by winning an even larger majority in Parliament. She must have been pretty shocked, then, to not only lose seats but lose her majority altogether.
That leaves in question a “hard” Brexit or a “soft” Brexit, among other things. Since we’ve all got more than enough twists and turns to focus on right here at home—where it’s now rumored that Donald Trump may fire the special counsel investigating Russia’s election influence—let John Oliver break down the evolving implications for you.
