John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight Rant on Misogynistic Internet Trolls Is Everything

On the latest episode of Last Week Tonight, John Oliver tore into a rant on the horrific things women have to look forward to when voicing their opinions online. This rant was seemingly prompted by GTFO: The Movie, a documentary that focuses on women in gaming and, of course, the misogynistic threats inevitably levied against them for being in that industry. Oliver all but namechecks Gamergate, showing clips of interviews from GTFO: The Movie as well as Anita Sarkeesian and Brianna Wu’s ABC News interviews.

When it comes to revenge porn—or, more accurately, nonconsensual pornography—he explains the ridiculous process of having naked photos of yourself removed from online websites which includes copyrighting your body. The most absurd part of that process? Sending in nude photos of yourself to strangers at the copyright office in order to stop having strangers look at your nude body.

What?

Oliver genuinely seems frustrated with not only how much women have to put up with just by being online, but he’s incredibly mystified by how ill-equipped authorities are to deal with these issues. Give the video a watch, if not for the subject matter, then for the hilarious 90s America Online commercial parody. It’s worth a shot.
