Sound the Alarm: Jude Law Will Play Young Dumbledore in Fantastic Beasts Sequels and We Are So Here for It

But none for Johnny Depp.

You know what? I’m just gonna spit it right out: Jude Law has been cast as young Albus Dumbledore in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts sequels and this is fantastic news. See what I did there?

Back in November, director David Yates and producer David Heyman told me they were searching for someone to play a younger version of the beloved Hogwarts headmaster (previously portrayed by Richard Harris and Michael Gambon in the Harry Potter films) so it feels sort of full circle to see the announcement coming now. Plus, it’s Jude Law and we already know what he can do in a full set of heavy robes. (Spoiler alert: Act well. Why, what were you thinking?)

So far, it’s been revealed that the second film will take place in Paris and other parts of the U.K., and that there will be four additional sequels. It was originally supposed to be a trilogy but then “about halfway through writing the second film, she [J.K. Rowling] got really excited and decided it was going to be five,” Yates told me.

This all sounds great but then I remember that Johnny domestic abuser Depp is going to be Grindelwald and then I start to feel ambivalent about it. There’s no ignoring the fact that he will be a major force in the upcoming sequels and I don’t even get more Colin Farrell to balance that out. “There’s no plans to bring Colin back for the sequel,” Heyman told Screen Rant. What a bummer.

Are you on board with this young Pope Dumbledore casting? Still going to see the films despite its giant and very problematic elephant? I know you have a lot of feelings about this, so feel free to share in the comments below.
