Planet of the Apes Fan Judy Greer Lives the Dream, Is Cast as the Female Ape Lead in Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Mutatis Mutandis
I’m just going to go ahead and put the best part of Judy Greer‘s interview with Vulture about her Apes casting right up front: “It’s funny, because when I talk to my [Planet of the Apes-obsessed] husband about the movie, he’s like, ‘I don’t want to know! I do want to know! Do you think you should tell me? Don’t tell me!”
Poor guy.
Greer, best known for her roles in Arrested Development and The Descendants (she voices Cheryl in Archer, too) has been cast in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes as Cornelia, a lady chimp who briefly appeared in Rise of the Planet of the Apes and was set up as a potential love interest for Andy Serkis‘ Caesar.
Greer’s character was named after Cornelius, one of the main primates in the original Planet of the Apes… which Greer would know because, as she explained to Vulture, “I married a man who … I’m gonna use the word obsessed. He is obsessed with Planet of the Apes.”
“We had a chimp husband-and-wife cake topper at our wedding. At the cocktail hour, we played Planet of the Apes and Rise of the Planet of the Apes on two separate televisions in the bar area. And on the wedding gift I bought him, a vintage Rolex, I had it engraved, ‘Ape shall not kill ape.’ I was then told that, technically, it’s ‘Ape shall never kill ape,’ but there wasn’t enough space for engraving purposes.”
Yeah, Judy Greer’s husband. Deal with it.
Greer was convinced to go after a role in Dawn by Serkis, with whom she co-starred in 13 Going on 30 (“He played a human man in that one”). She then met with director Matt Reeves, whom she doubtless impressed with her vast Planet of the Apes knowledge. Well, kinda: “I think I might have freaked him out a little bit.”
OK. I’m officially on-board with this casting.
