Kanye West Is Still Very Much Committed to Running for President in 2020

Recommended Videos

Sorry, just give me a moment. I need to pause and marvel at the fact that I can write that headline. Phew. Okay.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Kanye West totally confirmed his 2020 presidential run. When asked if he was still going to do it, he had only two words: “Oh, definitely.”

He also mentioned that he has these sobering moments where he comes to the realization that he’s essentially committed to seeing his promise through. He said, “I sit in clubs and I’m like, Wow, I’ve got five years before I go and run for office and I’ve got a lot of research to do, I’ve got a lot of growing up to do.” West can be described as mercurial and a person who often gets very much buried “in the moment,” so it’s notable to hear him say he believes he’s got “a lot of growing up to do.”

As for his motivations for running? They’re the very same motivations that keep West going: his parents. He said:

My dad has two masters degrees. My mom has a PhD, she used to work at Operation PUSH. Somehow the more and more creative I get, the closer and closer I get to who I was as a child. When I was a child, I was holding my mom’s hand at Operation PUSH. I think it’s time. Rap is great.

It’s fun. It’s fun to be a rock star, and I’ll never not be one I guess, but there’ll be a point where I become my mother’s child. With all the things I’ve done that people would consider to be accomplishments, what’s the point where I become the person that Donda and Raymond West raised? My parents’ child.

In explaining how he’s hoping to balance his creative projects with the campaign, West shared why he needs to keep doing what he’s doing, and admitted a bit of fear when it comes to his ability as a politician.

It’s very important that I continue to design, to be in practice of trying to make the best decisions possible. I hate politics. I’m not a politician at all. I care about the truth and I just care about human beings. I just want everyone to win, that’s all I can say, and I think we can.

Regardless of whether he’s ready or not, it seems the world is. There’s already a Kanye Super PAC, created to support him in his 2020 campaign, called Ready For Kanye. It was independently created, and there’s actual paperwork filed. So, you know. That’s hella official and everything.

I leave you with one of West’s most recent, poignant tweets.
