Prayer Circle for the Carol Corps: Kelly Sue DeConnick Is Leaving Captain Marvel
NOOOOOooooooooooooo.
HeroesCon is taking place this weekend in Charlotte, but it brings with it some tragic news for fans of the current Carol Danvers: comics queen Kelly Sue DeConnick will be ending her run on the series after Marvel’s Secret Wars event.
We already knew that Marvel wouldn’t be continuing with the current iteration of Captain Marvel after their big universe-colliding event (which includes DeConnick’s Captain Marvel and the Carol Corps series), so I can’t say this news comes as a total surprise. But DeConnick’s issues of Captain Marvel captured Carol’s personality in such a wonderful and geeky way, one that ensnared the hearts of lady comic readers (both new and old) everywhere, and it’s going to be hard to let go.
DeConnick confirmed the news during HeroesCon’s Milkfed Criminal Masterminds panel, on which she was a speaker along with her husband, Matt Fraction. According to ComicsBeat, DeConnick said “[s]he realized after the movie was announced that she would have to ‘dig in for three more years or drop the mic,’ but that Carol has taught her to ‘brave the next step.'”
@CaptMarvelNews So hard to go, but it’s time.

DeConnick will continue focusing on Pretty Deadly and Bitch Planet and, we assume, new awesome things that we will love just as much. Plus, there’s that deal she recently signed with Universal TV to bring her comics to the small screen, so I imagine that will keep her fairly busy, too. The Carol Corps will always love you, Kelly Sue; the force is strong with you.
