Kenneth Branagh May Have the Grimm Task of Directing Disney’s Live-Action Cinderella

Last we heard about Disney’s live-action version of Cinderella director Mark Romanek was out because Disney didn’t take too kindly to the dark (read: Actually fairy tale-esque) ending he wanted. Now Vulture reports that Kenneth Branagh might jump in instead. But Vulture, tell me what I really want to know: Is Cate Blanchett still on board as the evil stepmother?
We’re also told that The Hobbit star Cate Blanchett will remain in the movie as the wicked stepmother, though the production is still looking to find the right fit for its main role.
Whew. Thanks for the reassurance, Vulture. I was getting kinda antsy after Romanek left.
Disney is apparently still in negotiations with Branagh, who would start shooting in London this fall after he’s done directing the Chris Pine-starring actioner Jack Ryan, which comes out this Christmas.
So. The movie’s still chug-chug-chuggin’ along. The script was originally written by The Devil Wears Prada scribe Aline Brosh McKenna but is being re-written (I’m guessing because McKenna’s version was the “too dark” one) by Chris Weitz, who wrote About a Boy and The Golden Compass, which I imagine makes some of you less-than-hopeful. He also directed The Twilight Saga: New Moon, and I’m trying not to hold that against him but it’s really hard.
I like Branagh as a director, though, and if they get a good actress as Cinderella it could turn out well. I hope it’s Alicia Vikander, who was apparently being considered for the role at one point. I just saw A Royal Affair, and she was excellent in it. So. Fingers are still crossed that this ends up good.
