What’s the Sitch? Disney Is Working on a Live-Action Kim Possible Movie
Call me, beep me, if you wanna reach me.
Disney Channel is developing a live-action movie version of the early 2000s cartoon series Kim Possible. Yes, nostalgia movies right now are mostly just a way of cashing in on the good memories of your childhood favorites, but you know what guys, you got me, because Kim Possible is one of my favorite shows of all time.
I remember watching it when it first starting airing, all the way to the very end. The theme song was iconic and has been my ringtone several times throughout my life. It starred Christie Carlson-Romano from Even Stevens as Kim Possible and Will Friedle from Boy Meets World & Batman Beyond as Ron Stoppable, and the story rotated around Kim, a teenager girl whose side job was saving the world after school. She was smart, beautiful, and a kick-ass fighter, pretty much Buffy Summers and Batman rolled into one.
Kim Possible was a wish-fulfillment character, and it worked because the show was actually funny, didn’t take itself too seriously, but also respected its own inner logic. Kim was allowed to be a teenage girl who was amazing, but also never stopped being “normal.” Ron was always a great sidekick because he was happy being Kim’s best friend (and later on boyfriend) without being threatened by her being the hero.
According to Variety, the live-action movie script will be written by series creators Mark McCorkle and Robert Schooley, and they will also be executive producing. Josh Cagan will also write, with Zanne Devine also executive producing. The movie will be co-directed and co-produced by Adam B. Stein and Zach Lipovsky.
“Mark and Bob created an enduring character and kids all over the world found a friend in her, an average girl who just happens to spend her off-school hours thwarting evil villains,” said Adam Bonnett, executive vice president, original programming for Disney Channels Worldwide. “Although Kim Possible ‘can do anything,’ kids and tweens found that this animated redhead was just like them. As we embark on the fun challenge of making Kim and Ron fully dimensional, I’m thrilled to be working again with Mark and Bob and to welcome the addition of a dynamic creative team – Josh, Zanne, Adam and Zach – into a world where anything is indeed possible.”
Apparently, they’re working on the casting process now, and while I’m going to save my true excitement when they reveal who will be taking up the crop top mantle, I’m at least excited to know that Disney will be investing in some of its older shows. Maybe they will finally release box sets of The Proud Family, Kim Possible and all those Disney spin-off shows they keep pretending we forgot about. Aladdin and The Little Mermaid animated series were good!
As for casting, we all know that Bella Hadid or Dove Cameron is going to be Kim Possible, but who would be up for the rest of the cast? Sofia Carson as Bonnie? Maggie Q as Shego? Most importantly will Rufus be CGI, puppet or a live naked mole rat?
