Regretsy Wants You to Sing “Achy Breaky Heart” in Klingon
Got a decent singing voice? Good at pronouncing glottal stops? Not adverse to viral internet phenomena?
If so, Regretsy is doing a thing that may be relevant to your interests. It all started with an Alchemy request on Etsy.
Etsy, the popular online storefront for hand-crafters, has a feature called Alchemy, where potential buyers can post descriptions of hand-made items that they’d like to purchase from anyone who would want to make them. Crafters bid to win permission to get paid to make the item. A few days ago, April Winchell of Regretsy, “the fail blog of hand crafts,” noticed a particularly unique request:
I have translated “Achy Breaky Heart” by Billy Ray Cyrus into Klingon, which I will provide to the winning bidder.
I am looking for a vocal group willing to record this for me. Yes, that’s right. I want you to sing me “Achy Breaky Heart” in Klingon. Any singing style would be fine, for example opera or barber shop quartet.
While an audio recording would be fine, I would be willing to pay more for a video recording done in costume.
Naturally, she bid the heck out of that thing, and is now offering something special to her readers. Her full post on the production is here, but in a nutshell, she would like people to send her mp3 recordings and videos of themselves singing Klingon “Achy Breaky Heart” in costume, so that the clips and sound can be edited into one epic holiday themed music video.
The profits on the video will go to charity, as does all money generated by Regretsy.
It should go without saying that Geekosystem fully endorses this project. Now go, Internet! Fulfill this premise beyond our wildest imaginings!
