Karlie Kloss Starts #KodeWithKarlie Scholarship Foundation To Teach High School Girls To Code

Recommended Videos

Karlie Kloss is a model, but she’s also huge into tech, investigating the potential of kookie delivery by drone and vocal in her love of code. Now, with the Flatiron School, Kloss has started the #KodeWithKarlie scholarship program, giving twenty girls in the US free tuition to Flatiron Pre-College Academy’s Introduction to Software Engineering course.

“I think its crucial that young women learn to code as early as possible,” says Kloss, “to ensure that we have a voice and a stake in what the world looks like.”

There are twenty scholarships available – ten in NYC and ten spread between Austin, Boston, Chicago, Greenwich, Miami, San Francisco, and LA. The course is two weeks long, full-time, and will teach software engineering with Ruby-a (that’s what they use to power apps like Twitter). By the end of the course, girls will have learned how to create their very own app. If you don’t have a laptop, they’ll even loan you one free of charge for the duration of the two weeks.

To apply, upload a 30- to 90-second video to YouTube, and then fill out this form. You have to be a girl aged thirteen to eighteen to apply, and applications are open until May 1st.

Speaking with BuzzFeed, Kloss said, “It doesn’t matter if you’re a fashion model or high school student, understanding code is so important because it’s the language that runs our world! Young women are shaping the world we live in and code is a tool for us to continue to have a big voice and say in our future.”

You love code and you’re BFFs with T. Swift? You’re too much, Kloss. Too much.
