Deleted Last Jedi Scene Will Give Us More Phasma
As shameless trash, I’m still pretty happy about all of the Star Wars stuff that is going on. I mean does Solo look exciting? Not really but it has Lando so I’m gonna be seeing it when it drops. Until then, I plan on revisiting my second favorite Star Wars movie, The Last Jedi when it comes out on Blu-ray and we have some cutscenes to check out.
According to EW we are going to be getting a few really good things in this expanded edition. Spoilers for The Last Jedi and TLJ deleted scenes.
Luke’s ‘Third Lesson’ in his “New Rules” lineup: This scene has been explored previously and apparently features Luke going too far in his lessons with Rey where he lies to her about a raid going on in a village and Rey rushes to save the day, only to find that Luke has tricked her. Johnson has been semi coy about if this was the “real” third lesson, but the scene was shot and we will get to see if this is some OOC Luke stuff or Logically-Dark Luke stuff.
“Originally it was just a breaking point for her. ‘Okay, he’s gone too far,’” Johnson said. “This is the point where she finally says, ‘Okay, if you’re not gonna help, then I’ve wasted too much time here.” Johnson said he ultimately cut it because Rey didn’t need that breaking point in order to be tempted by the Dark Side… she was already on her way there.
Finn’s Stormtrooper Friend who may or may not be Tom Hardy: I totally forgot that Tom Hardy was among the group of secret celebrities who are Stormtroopers, along with British pop star Gary Barlow, and royal princes Harry and William.
The scene shows more of Finn, Rose, and DJ making their way through the flagship to finish their doomed-to-fail mission. Finn is recognized by a Stormtrooper who thinks that Finn got a promotion because of the new uniform.
“The implication from the exchange is that this was obviously an embarrassment that this happened with Finn, and that First Order didn’t let the info get out, as much as they could,” Johnson said. “The tension is broken by the fact that he doesn’t really know the story of what happened with Finn.”
I find this interesting because somehow the idea that Stormtroopers can get promotions seems strange? I kind of think of Stormtroopers as eternal plebs, but if they can move up in ranks and there is some upward mobility why do they also take in child slaves? I just want to know more about how the evil empire functions.
And most importantly…
PHASMA STUFF: One of the biggest complaints among all of us was the severe lack of Phasma in TLJ. For bringing in the amazing Gwendoline Christie for the role, I would expect to see some more coming from the character. I know she’s the “Boba Fett” of the story, but Boba’s success was an accident of coolness, he wasn’t hinted to have a deeper storyline or a bigger connection with the cast the same was Phasma has with Finn.
According to the EW description, the battle between Finn and Phasma ultimately led to her getting the upper hand, surrounding Finn with the help of her Stormtroopers. However, Finn had a plan up his sleeve: He told the other Stormtroopers that Phasma’s a coward, revealing how easily she handed over the shield codes to Starkiller Base to save her own chromed hide.
“I really like the little moment of Phasma being caught and getting called out by John, and that little game of chess that they have,” Johnson said. “But we needed a much more condensed version of that scene.”
Fearing what the Stormtrooper’s reaction might be to the revelation, Phasma shoots all of them and returns to her fight with Finn which resulted in the same fall into the fire. That said, Johnson calls her “the Kenny from South Park of Star Wars,” so who knows what might happen. (i09)
Um…we should have gotten that.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi comes out on digital release March 13, and will be out on Blu-ray and DVD March 27. Let’s see how it goes and how fandom feels about the scenes we could have gotten.
