LEGO Will Officially Make the Women of NASA LEGO Set a Real Product!
With timing that couldn’t be more perfect on the heels of Hidden Figures‘ awards season buzz, LEGO Ideas is moving forward with the proposed Women of NASA LEGO set that highlights even more real-life women in our space program!
The set features Hidden Figures‘ Katherine Johnson alongside other women who made great contributions to NASA: Margaret Hamilton (computer scientist who developed the Apollo Moon mission flight software), Sally Ride (physicist and the first American woman in space), Nancy Grace Roman (an astronomer with a big hand in planning the Hubble Space Telescope), and Mae Jemison (medical doctor and the first African-American woman in space).
We’ve been following the Women of NASA set since it was first introduced to LEGO Ideas, and we couldn’t be more excited to see that LEGO will bring it to life—and bring its inspiration into people’s homes. LEGO Marketing Manager Lise Dydensborg made the announcement yesterday:
“A big congratulations to 20tauri on becoming the next official LEGO Ideas fan designer! As a science editor and writer, with a strong personal interest for space exploration as well as the history of women in science and engineering, Maia Weinstock’s Women of NASA project was a way for her to celebrate accomplished women in the STEM professions. In particular those who’ve made a big impact through their work at NASA.
We’re really excited to be able to introduce Maia’s Women of NASA set for its inspirational value as well as build and play experience.”
The next step in the process is for an actual LEGO set to be created around the ideas originally submitted, so we can probably expect some extra bells and whistles to really give these women the LEGO tribute they deserve. We can’t wait to see what they come up with.
