The LEGO Movie 2 Has a Trailer and It’s Chock-Full of Stephanie Beatriz Awesomeness
We’ve been excited about The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part for quite some time now, but every time we think this movie can’t get anymore Our Exact Aesthetic, they prove us wrong. First, they promised us that the sequel would do better by its female characters than the already much-beloved original. Then we were told the entire premise (or at least a major component) would focus on gender bias and representation in toys and children’s marketing, something we tend to be pretty passionate about around these parts.
Then the project brought in Bojack Horseman’s Raphael Bob-Waksberg to take a pass at the script (never, I assume, a bad thing to do) and they added Tiffany Haddish to the cast as a new character, Queen Watevra Wa-Nabi. (Also, Broad City’s Arturo Castro has been announced as joining the cast.)
We’ve still got nine months until the movie’s release, so we may need to slow our roll when it comes to getting so worked up over new additions to the cast, as there are bound to be many more. That’s easier said than done, though, when they’re adding actors like Mary Sue perma-fave, Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Stephanie Beatriz.

That helmeted figure is Beatriz’s character, Sweet Mayhem. From the trailer above, we know she’s an outsider with a sick soundtrack, looking for the leader of the no-longer very awesome Bricksburg. (That’s according to the movie itself. If you ask me, this LEGO Fury Road set-up looks extremely awesome.) And, in a very Rosa move, she doesn’t get why that leader is Chris Pratt’s Emmet. As she clarifies with Elizabeth Banks’ Lucy (aka Wyldstyle), “So you fought and master-built and kicked butt and then the hapless male was the leader?”
We are here for all of this.
