The Force Awakens Will Address Leia Organa By A New Formal Title
And it isn't "Queen."
Leia Organa won’t answer to “Princess” anymore, as of Star Wars: The Force Awakens — and I suppose her new title might count as a spoiler, so if you care about that sort of thing, don’t read on!
The predictable new title would be “Queen,” but that’s not it — nor is it “Your Worshipfulness” or “Your Worship,” as Han might have wished. J.J. Abrams told EW,
She’s referred to as General. But … there’s a moment in the movie where a character sort of slips and calls her ‘Princess.’ … The stakes are pretty high in the story for her, so there’s not much goofing around where Leia’s concerned, but it felt historic to have her, especially with Harrison, back in scenes together. I can only imagine the baggage that they bring to it, I’m just a fan who loves this stuff, but they’ve been living with it — and living in it — since ’77.
Carrie Fisher had some ideas of her own about how the other characters might refer to her, given how well everybody knows each other by now. She quipped, “People should say, ‘Hey! You! My one true joy!'”
Fisher also elaborated about how Leia Organa might be holding up, during the events of The Force Awakens:
Not easily. [Leia is] solitary. Under a lot of pressure. Committed as ever to her cause, but I would imagine feeling somewhat defeated, tired, and pissed.
Given that, and Abrams’ comment about the “high stakes” for Leia’s narrative arc, well … there’s a lot here to speculate about! What do we think, folks?
