Bae Before Bay: We’re Getting a Life is Strange Live Action Series

Life Is Strange - Max and Chloe

Legendary Digital, the folks behind a lot of the Nerdist Industries and Geek and Sundry videos, have just announced that they’re looking to bring Life is Strange to life in a live action digital series. In a release, Legendary Digital Senior Vice President of Development and Production Greg Siegel wrote, “Life is Strange is one of those rare properties that combines incredibly developed characters and storylines with deeply engaging gameplay. It lends itself perfectly to live-action imaginings. We couldn’t be more excited to partner with Square Enix, DONTDOD Entertainment and dj2 to bring the world of Arcadia Bay to life in an exciting new way.”

If you haven’t checked out Life is Strange for yourself, or if you haven’t checked out any of our coverage on the game, the here’s the rundown. Max Caulfield, a photography student at a prestigious art school in the northwest, finds out that she can rewind time. She discovers she has this ability as she witnesses a girl getting shot in the bathroom at her school. This sets off a chain of events that, due to Max’s interference with the space-time continuum, become all the more dramatic and wild as the series continues. There’s some heavy Butterfly Effect references involved, with a hefty dose of mumblecore weirdness.

The game spawned a particularly devoted fandom who latched on to the various characters and their unique stories. Its ending is considered to be a bit contentious, amongst other things. Criticisms of the game centered on its (at points) somewhat stilted dialogue, and its heavy-handed approach to forcing the player into a specific storyline or ending. That being said, it still remains a really intriguing story overall, one that’s steeped in a fair amount of teenage angst.

It’ll be interesting to see if they can pull off this story in a live action format. I’m mostly curious to see who Legendary Digital ends up casting for each of the roles, as they’re all very unique personalities.

Lastly: here’s hoping they end with bae before bay (spoilers).
