The Lizzie Bennet Diaries Won An Emmy!
Good News Everyone!
I know what you’re thinking. “But Rebecca, the Emmys haven’t even happened yet!” That’s true. But the Creative Arts Emmys for digital media programming have been announced, and that’s where the LBD crew took home some gold.
Or maybe you’re just thinking “Oh my God, The Lizzie Bennet Diaries won an Emmy! That’s so cool!”
Can’t say I blame you.
For the uninitiated, The Lizzie Bennet Diaries is a modern-day web series adaptation of Jane Austen‘s Pride and Prejudice that tells the story of the Bennets, Charlotte Lu, William Darcy (and his hats), Bing Lee, Pemberley Digital, and the rest of P&P through vlogs and social media accounts run by the characters. It’s the social media aspect that netted the show its Emmy for Original Interactive Program.
By the time it ended last March The Lizzie Bennet Diaries had blown up on the Internet, accumulating a veritable army of fans, Austenites and non-Austenites alike. A Kickstarter campaign to release the series on DVD met its goal in less than six hours and ultimately raised over $400,000 in excess of what it originally sought.
That a show so embraced by the Internet would go on to achieve such industry recognition as an Emmy is pretty amazing. Here’s hoping the LBD crew’s follow-up, Emma Approved, sees a similar level of success. Also, here’s hoping I actually get around to watching LDB sometime soon. It’s getting embarrassing.
