Lizzy Caplan Starring in Avengers Short Film No One Knew Was Happening

I See What They Did There

Bet you didn’t know this one was happening! Or at least, that’s the impression I’m getting from all of the articles surrounding this one image including the words “top secret.” But alas, now you know: Lizzy Caplan is teaming up with Marvel to co-star in short film called Item 47, which follows a couple as they find one of the discarded alien guns from the finale of The Avengers and decide what to do with it. The couple will be played by Caplan (Party Down, Mean Girls) and Jesse Bradford (Flags of Our Fathers, Bring it On), so expect some wry commentary along the way.

Presumably the fictional couple will make some very bad decisions with their big, dangerous alien gun, and their hijinks will be viewable at a special screening at San Diego Comic-Con next week, and then on The Avengers Blu-ray, out September 25th.

The film itself, named after the abandoned alien paraphernalia in question, is a good chance for Marvel to dive even further into the on-screen world of The Avengers, showcasing how some non-super-powered people react to a world thrown into chaos. They’ve done it before, in shorts for Thor (A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor’s Hammer) and Captain America (The Consultant). Item 47, however, will be around three times as long as previous efforts.

As for those aforementioned bad decisions, the Caplan/Bradford coupling will make quite a few. As Marvel Studios co-president Louis D’Esposito explains in an interview with Entertainment Weekly:

“The world is topsy-turvy now. There’s been an alien invasion, and things are crazy. So when this gun literally fell into their lap, this is a sign: We’re going to rob a few banks, we’re going to buy a boat, we’re going to the Caribbean, and all our problems will be solved.”

Crazy kids and their alien weaponry.

The short will feature two S.H.I.E.L.D agents, as played by Titus Welliver (who played The Man in Black on Lost) and Maximiliano Hernández (previously seen in Thor and The Avengers).

In the end, though what we are concerned with is this: Lizzy Caplan needs to befriend Joss Whedon, and fast. We feel this friendship would be beneficial to us.
