As Loki season 2 gets closer and closer, details are starting to emerge about the next chapter in the God of Mischief’s story. Now, thanks to the release of the trailer, we have more information about the new characters who will be joining Loki and the gang. Here’s what we know!

Loki season 2 characters, cast, and crew: new and old faces

Disney+

Over the past year, Marvel has confirmed that virtually all cast members from Season 1 will be returning, and Disney has announced a few new faces. The teaser features Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Owen Wilson as Mobius, Sophia di Martino as Sylvie, Eugene Cordero as Casey (who is reportedly upgraded to a series regular), Gugu MBatha Raw as Ravonna Renslayer, and Wunmi Mosaku as Hunter B-15. Tara Strong will also reprise the role of Miss Minutes.

Joining them will be Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once) as a TVA employee. Rumors that the character’s name is Ouroboros seem to be at least partially true: in the trailer, Mobius addresses Quan as O.B. O.B. seems to be in charge of the Time Variance Authority’s technology, since Mobius goes to see him when Loki starts time slipping, and he later repairs Mobius’s cracked pressure suit with a length of duct tape.

Another new character will be played by Rafael Casal (Blindspotting). Casal was was spotted on set last summer wearing a TVA prisoner jumpsuit, and the trailer reveals that he’s an actor attending the premiere of the movie Zaniac (which is based on a classic Marvel character, of course). A sign on the red carpet reveals that the character’s name is Brad Wolfe, which is Zaniac’s alter ego in the comics. In the trailer, along with clips that have been released as part of McDonald’s’ “As Featured In” promotion, Loki and Mobius apprehend Wolfe, interrogate him, and then take him to the McDonald’s where Sylvie is working to buy him a milkshake.

Kate Dickie (Game of Thrones) has also joined the cast, and rumors suggest she may play a villain, or even an older version of Sylvie.

The Disney press release on June 22, 2023 also listed Liz Carr (The Witcher) in an undisclosed role, and Neil Ellice, who played Hunter D-90 in season 1.

Finally, Jonathan Majors will return as at least one more variant of He Who Remains, who in turn is a variant of Kang the Conqueror. Majors plays several versions of Kang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, including Victor Timely, who puts on a presentation in the second post-credit scene with Loki and Mobius in the audience.

Loki season 2 is directed by Justin Benson, Aaron Moorhead, Dan Deleeuw, and Kasra Farhani, with Eric Martin serving as head writer.

Loki season 2 trailer

Finally, after the poster and countdown tease on Twitter, Marvel and Disney+ unveiled the full, official trailer for Loki season 2. It’s so close! The trailer showcases several new and returning characters (while keeping others hidden), and hints at some major plot points, which I’ll get into below.

Before we had a full trailer, Disney had released some footage in its Disney+ promos.

In the promos, we saw tiny snippets of the plot of Loki season 2: Loki duplicating himself while wearing a tuxedo, fighting with a TVA hunter, falling through the TVA, and pruning a mosaic of the Time Keepers with the robotic head Sylvie severed in season 1 sitting on a table in front of him. These promos incorporated some of the footage that was shown in a rough teaser at Disney’s D23 Expo in September 2022.

Loki season 2 plot

In a June 22, 2023 press release, Disney announced the official plot synopsis of Loki season 2.

“Loki” Season 2 picks up in the aftermath of the shocking season finale when Loki finds himself in a battle for the soul of the Time Variance Authority. Along with Mobius, Hunter B-15 and a team of new and returning characters, Loki navigates an ever-expanding and increasingly dangerous multiverse in search of Sylvie, Judge Renslayer, Miss Minutes and the truth of what it means to possess free will and glorious purpose.

What else do we know about the Loki season 2 plot? With the caveat that Marvel loves to mislead viewers with its trailers, here are some likely plot beats we’ll see in season 2.

Loki is time slipping. The trailer starts off with Loki glitching in and out of reality, and getting pulled through time. The time slipping seems to take Loki to some pretty useful places (including a jet ski dealership!), but is it also harming him? We’ll have to see. In the meantime, it explains why Mobius recognizes Loki again after the season 1 cliffhanger, and hints that Loki may have a heart-to-heart with his younger self.

Loki and Mobius are tracking down Kang variants. Or, well, they’re tracking down something. We see them at the 1893 Chicago World Fair, eating popcorn and coming upon Victor Timely (yes, like in the Quantumania post-credit scene).

Sylvie’s trying to live a normal life. As Loki executive producer Kevin Wright explains in relation to the McDonald’s promotion, Sylvie is trying to fulfill her need for a stable, wholesome life by working as a cashier at McDonald’s. In the trailer, though, we see her fighting the TVA alongside Loki, so obviously that plan doesn’t work out. Sylvie aimed for low-key, but ended up with Loki. (Get it? Get it?? I might reuse that in another article.)

The TVA is in danger. Multiple clues in the trailer point to the TVA getting destroyed by the branching multiverse.

As usual, Marvel has sworn all relevant parties to absolute secrecy, but a few additional clues have escaped. Last year, Tom Hiddleston described Loki’s character in season 2 as “even more chaotic and turbulent” than he is in season 1, and said that season 2 will be a “battle for the soul of the TVA” (a phrase which, you’ll notice, is repeated in the official synopsis). Gugu Mbatha Raw said that season 2 will be “bolder and more surreal” than season 1.

Loki season 2 posters

Along with the trailer, Disney+ released two character posters of everyone’s favorite chaos god.

Are those the horns I spy? Could Loki end up in his costume from the comics? The new season can’t come fast enough.

Loki season 2 release date

After many delays, scandals, and rumors, Loki season 2 finally has an official release date: October 6, 2023. And there’s a bonus: Echo is dropping less than two months later, on November 29!

Hang in there, mischief makers! Just a few more weeks to go!
