Luke Evans Will Star In A Dracula Origin Story, Will Probably Wind Up Shirtless

All this has happened before...

He’s played a Aramis, Apollo, and Zeus in his time but actor Luke Evans is ready to take on another classic role; that of Dracula in Universal’s vampire origin story.

Hilariously, The Hollywood Reporter originally had Dracula Year Zero as the title for the film but has since been contacted by Universal who said it will simply be called Dracula. So at least they have some sense. Here’s the details:

Michael De Luca is producing the project, which quietly has been greenlighted and hopes to start shooting later this year. Commercials helmer Gary Shore is making his directorial debut on the picture. Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless wrote the script. Alissa Phillips is executive producing.

The story of Dracula has been told countless times in media and the role played by many actors. Just how will Dracula’s story unfold this time around? “This project hopes to set the tone for the modern age with a historical-oriented origin story,” said THR. “The script tells of a young prince who, when the lives of his wife and child are put in danger by a bloodthirsty sultan, risks his soul to save them, and in the process becomes the first vampire.”

I’m a Dracula fan, and Evans is a good actor, but I’m not holding out much hope for this one, you?
