Lupita Nyong’o Talks Star Wars: The Force Awakens In Vogue (And Rocks the Cover)
Lupita Nyong’o’s feature in Vogue’s October issue, for which she also appears on the cover, focuses on everything from her childhood in Kenya, her love of fashion, and her experience playing a CGI character in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The story includes a quote from director J.J. Abrams about how he was “desperate” to cast the actress in his film, as well as Nyong’o’s description of how it felt to play the pirate Maz Kanata:
[Motion capture is] really bizarre and lots of fun. I really enjoyed the fact that you’re not governed by your physical presence in that kind of work. You can be a dragon. You can be anything.
My training at Yale is the core of the actor that I am. Before that I was just going on instinct … having my imagination take over. But Yale taught me that it’s about giving yourself permission to pretend.
