MAC Cosmetics is definitely trolling all of us with their latest partnership. Remember DreamWorks’ Trolls movie, slated to come out in 2016? It’s a movie inspired by those Troll dolls that got mega-popular in the mid-90s, and now MAC’s releasing a cosmetics line inspired by the movie and the dolls.
MAC’s creative director, James Gager, told Vogue: “The Good Luck Trolls have evoked love and joy since the 60s. We are so happy we can put the spotlight on them again. MAC Cosmetics celebrates pop culture and fantasy – and brings these enchanting characters to life – through this eclectic, bright-hued collection.”
Seems like a strange tie-in, since the Troll dolls aren’t exactly known for their makeup proficiency. If this were a line of hair dyes, that would make sense, but instead, it’s a collection of lipsticks, lip glosses, and eyeshadow hues. The makeup shades take a clear inspiration from the hues of the troll dolls’ hair. Which … sounds like it would be bad. Right? Well, let’s see.
Buzzfeed did a test on each of the products on different skin tones. The three lipsticks, and also the blue eyeshadow, look rave-ready to me. By comparison, the line of lip glosses is quite understated; even the blue gloss doesn’t look so strange once it’s on. The eyeshadow palette, aside from the bright blue one, is also surprisingly subtle when worn. So, there’s something for both the nighttime troll and the daytime troll, here.
If you decide you’d like some of the collection yourself, it’ll go on sale online at MAC starting on July 28.
