Get Ready to Cry—A ‘Made In Abyss’ Season 2 Is Coming!

Just all the tears.

Key art for Made in Abyss Season 2

For me, one of the standout anime of the 2017 season was Made In Abyss. Until Steven Universe Future hit the right nerve at the right moment in 2020, the first season of Made in Abyss held the distinct honor of “Most I Have Ever Cried Due To Anything On A Screen.” Yet, fans outside of Japan likely haven’t seen a new addition to the story in five years. But I have excellent news for your tear ducts: Made In Abyss season 2 is coming this summer. But there’s kind of a narrative catch.

Here’s What We Know

First thing’s first: the second season of Made In Abyss will begin airing in July 2022. The official subtitle of the season is The Golden City of the Scorching Sun, which seemingly refers to the 6th layer. But, very confusingly, there’s a gap between seasons 1 and 2 which might surprise fans outside of Japan. Unless you’ve been paying incredibly close attention.

You see, there have been three Made In Abyss films since the first season. Two of them—Journey’s Dawn and Wandering Twilight—recap the hallmarks of season one. But the third one, entitled Dawn of the Deep Soul, covers the next arc of the story. And season two of the show appears to pick up where Dawn of the Deep Soul left off.

If you missed the fact that Dawn of the Deep Soul even existed, don’t feel bad. The film was released in Japan in January 2020, and was set to begin rolling out in the US in March 2020. Except…hm…what else happened in March 2020?

And so, Dawn of the Deep Soul never got a proper stateside release. It was available to stream at some point, but I remember this news reaching me as if in a hazy fog. In other words, I never watched it. If this also describes you, Dawn of the Deep Soul is presently available to stream on HIDIVE. Given the impending nature of the second season, it’s likely the film will be more widely available to stream in the coming months. I hope.

What platform Made In Abyss: The Golden City of the Scorching Sun will stream on remains to be seen. Season one has an exclusive deal with Amazon Prime. Which continues to be a bummer. Given that Crunchyroll was instrumental in breaking the news of season two’s release date, perhaps that license will transfer over? Only time will tell. In the meantime, you can revisit the first season on Amazon Prime and have a nice ugly cry.
