Confirmed: Martha Won’t Be Back for the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Episode
Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey Stuff
Ladies and gentlemen, we may have reached the event horizon at which concrete plans for the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special have actually been made. By a real person. Probably in England. What this means is, that we no longer have to play the game of “here’s a thing somebody said which may or may not actually shed light on the contents of the special and which old characters will be coming back.”
Which brings me to my point, which is that Freema Agyeman, the actress who played Series 3 companion Martha Jones, says she’s definitely not in the special.
She told Crave:
I’m doing two things for the 50th but nothing to do with being in the drama.
I got misquoted hideously once saying that there are some rumblings going on about being involved in the 50th in terms of the drama. It’s not. It’s in terms of conventions and interviews and things like that, which we’re all doing stuff to promote the 50th. We have to. It’s the Doctor Who family and we want to.
And while I’m sad to see this concrete sign that not all the companions will be returning (Martha’s my second favorite companion after Donna), it does leave this interesting question in my brain. David Tennant is apparently being warned quite closely not to say anything about the special. Last week I thought there was just as likely that he was told not to reveal that he isn’t in the special as that he is. But if Agyeman is free to talk about how she’s not involved…
Maybe Tennant really does know something.
