Kevin Feige Gains More Control as Marvel Undergoes Massive Shake-Up
But which side will Hawkguy be on????
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kevin Feige is spearheading a reorganization of Marvel after “several years of frustration” over working with Marvel Entertainment CEO Isaac “female-led movies bomb” Perlmutter.
Feige was reportedly fed up with Perlmutter’s micromanaging, and brought his concerns to Disney CEO Bob Iger earlier this summer. A spokesperson for Disney explained,
Marvel Studios is taking the next logical step in its integration with The Walt Disney Studios, joining Pixar and Lucasfilm in centralizing many of its film-related functions in Burbank, with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and co-president Louis D’Esposito continuing to lead the Marvel Studios team reporting to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn.
/Film notes that the deal places control over the MCU more firmly in Feige’s hands, and may encourage him to either renew his contract with Marvel after Phase 3, or put him in line for a position down the line with LucasFilm or another massive Disney property.
Given Feige’s track record in regards to representation and female characters, I’m frankly not thrilled to see him gain even more control over the MCU. That being said, Perlmutter may have been equally uninterested in diversity; in an email leaked by the Sony hack, he famously outlined examples of female-led superhero films that bombed at the box office.
