Producer Mentions Captain Marvel While Discussing Possible Female Led Superhero Films
My Spidey Sense Is Tingling
Someone at Marvel has just made a lot of people happy. And he hasn’t even said anything definite. Hit the jump to find out what’s got us so excited.
Speaking with ComingSoon.net, producer/director Louis D’Esposito got on the topic of Marvel Entertainment’s film slate as it pertains to the women of Marvel Comics. Previously, at San Diego Comic-Con this year, he seemed to be hinting at a possible Captain Marvel (aka Carol Danvers) film when asked for a Peggy Carter-like short for the character. He said, “We should do that as a feature, though, right?”
This recent interview delved a bit deeper:
“There’s obviously a drumbeat that is banging louder and louder that we want a female lead superhero,” he says. “… [W]e have strong female characters in our films from Black Widow to Pepper Potts to Peggy Carter and you never know. Maybe there’s an offshoot film with one of them. Or Captain Marvel, you know?”
While D’Esposito isn’t speaking with any amount of certainty here, it is interesting to note he’s well aware of the potential Marvel women have. And bringing up Captain Marvel again certainly makes it seem like she’s at the top of their list when the time comes to break the mold and invest in a female led superhero film. It wouldn’t surprise me considering Marvel revamped the character just last year with help from writer Kelly Sue DeConnick. The former Ms. Marvel took on the mantle of her predecessor, something fans considered a long time coming and something many younger generation characters have done in the past.
But according to ComingSoon, while D’Esposito thinks a Captain Marvel film, or other female led film, will happen, we may still have a wait:
“It’s hard,” he says. “because we have a small group at Marvel. We do two films a year. To get those two films done and to do them right takes a lot of work and manpower. And female-power, obviously. To add a third film and to just put it in the slate right now is difficult. We have these next three, four, five films coming out and that’s what we’re really concentrating on.”
So the issue here is, Marvel Entertainment already has their slate set for the next few years and putting another film on the pile is too much strain on them as a whole. I’ve got an idea, D’Esposito, just push back Doctor Strange and replace that release date with Captain Marvel. There. I have solved all your problems. Now get to work.
