Marvel Studios Might Do “One-Shots” Online, Starting with Avengers: Infinity War
Marvel Studios hasn’t released one of their “One-Shots” in a while, but these short films about unsung Marvel heroes were a highlight of DVD extra menus. The Agent Carter one-shot even led to Peg getting her own series! Marvel hasn’t put any of these out in a while, as DVD menus become increasingly obsolete in our post-streaming era. Good news, though: Marvel’s one-shots might soon make a comeback on YouTube or possibly other social media platforms, depending on how the financing shakes out.
Joe and Anthony Russo, the directors of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War, told Forbes about their idea for shooting more scenes that take place within the world of Infinity War. Anthony Russo put it as follows,
We can’t go into too many details about this but we are thinking, very specifically, about to do new ways of what you are talking about with Avengers: Infinity War. We’re just in the beginning phases of figuring them out. Yes, DVDs are gone but there is this wonderful internet platform out there called YouTube …
It can make money by creating anticipation for a movie in the same way that a trailer does. There could do more elaborate versions of trailers, for instance, that are shot specifically for online that will never appear in the movie but that may appear as a kind of short film.
Joe Russo went on to add, “We’re also talking to Facebook and Twitter and Instagram about ways to feed ancillary content to them and to viewers because it’ll go viral there and you can reach millions of people.”
Given that Joe and Anthony Russo have already said that they’d love to do a Black Widow film — and given that Marvel Studios doesn’t seem to have plans to do anything of the sort — I think I have my prediction for which character they’d plan to focus on in this “ancillary content”. What do you all think?
