We’re 10 days away from the premiere of Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors on Disney Channel and Disney XD, and the more we see of the film, the more excited we get. The trailer gave us a glimpse of the mostly female roster of young superheroes, which include Ms. Marvel (Kathreen Khavari), Squirrel Girl (Milana Vayntrub), Ghost-Spider (Dove Cameron), and Quake (Chloe Bennet, voicing her Agents of SHIELD character).

Here we get a closer look at America Chavez, voiced by Cierra Ramirez (The Fosters). America Chavez, aka Miss America, has been an important character since her debut in the 2011 limited series Vengeance by Joe Casey (Ben 10) and Nick Dragotta (East of West). She’s Marvel’s first Latinx queer character to have an ongoing series, and will be joining the West Coast Avengers in the upcoming series by Kelly Thompson (Jem and the Holograms). There are no plans yet for an America Chavez movie, but Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin) has already expressed interest in playing the character.

Ramirez says of the character, “What I love about America is, first off, she’s very sassy. You don’t really know why she’s quite like that in the beginning, but there is a lot of method behind her madness. She does have a good heart and she means well, and she really learns to become a team player.” Ramirez also touched on the importance of inclusive characters, saying “I think it’s really important for young kids to see someone that looks like them on TV. That’s what I love about this, it’s very universal, and anyone can really relate to any one of the characters.”

The super-powered teens team up under the guidance of Captain Marvel, voiced by Kim Raver (Grey’s Anatomy) to form their own superhero team. Raver talked about Captain Marvel’s mentorship role, which she describes as a “Clint Eastwood” type of character (let’s hope this doesn’t mean we get a scene of Carol Danvers lecturing an empty stool). Raver continued, saying that she thinks the film is a “great example for families. I love the diversity in it, I love the body differences, I just think that it’s really reflective of where we are today and really supports where we need to go.”

Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors premieres September 30th simultaneously on Disney Channel and Disney XD.
