Not to Be Left Out of the Superhero Craze, Matt Damon Would Totally Do a Daredevil Movie, You Guys
Sad Affleck-Daredevil is sad.
I’m in on one condition: He has to fight Charlie Cox for it. (Psst I would like to bet all my money on Cox, please.)
Don’t worry, though; Matt Damon’s not just cluelessly offering himself up for a movie that isn’t going to happen in the foreseeable future—you know, being that the Daredevil TV show is currently a huge success. He was simply lamenting that he’d passed up the opportunity to play Daredevil in the first place and mentioned that he’d be up for an opportunity to rectify that mistake … in some alternate universe where that was a possibility and there was a creative team in place to prevent it from being the disaster he once left to Ben Affleck, that is.
In an interview with the NY Daily News to promote The Martian, a film that is actually happening, Damon mentioned that while he thinks his buddy Ben Affleck is going about Batman the right way, he can’t picture himself as a superhero outside of his missed Daredevil opportunity. He explained:
For us it was always ‘Daredevil’ — that’s the comic we read when we were kids. But when that one came along (in 2003) I chickened out, because I couldn’t tell. I hadn’t seen the director (Mark Steven Johnson’s) work and I didn’t know. So I just said, ‘No.’ Ben was like, ‘I gotta do it.’
And the movie ended up doing very well, even though I don’t think Ben was ultimately very proud of it.
And Ben Affleck never forgave him for letting him go through with it—OK, I made that part up, as far as I know.
Then he added, “If Chris Nolan came up to me and said, ‘I want to do Daredevil,’ I would be in.” Luckily, his friendship with Affleck likely won’t have to weather a Damon take on Daredevil if Charlie Cox has anything to say about it. You missed your chance, Matt Damon.
