Melissa McCarthy and Gilmore Girls Are Cool, but She’s Still Not Returning to Stars Hollow
At least ... not yet.
One of the biggest sadnesses for Gilmore Girls fans re: the upcoming revival is that there will be no Sookie St. James. People have been wondering why Melissa McCarthy wouldn’t be returning to the role, and the answers have been less than satisfactory. There were even suspicions that maybe all wasn’t well relationship-wise between McCarthy and the show. Well, McCarthy recently put all those rumors to bed.
In a recent interview with Mark Malkin for E! Online, she talked about having not been asked—but that it was probably all just a misunderstanding involving assumptions about her “packed” schedule:
In the short clip, McCarthy says:
I didn’t actually get asked to do it. But I think they thought I was busy, and then by the time it did come up, then I actually was.
I’m actually thrilled that it’s happening. I loved that show, and I think the fans for that show are super loyal and great and I will watch every single one of them.
When asked if she would join the show if the revival goes on beyond one more season, she jokes:
I want to cook again. I want to put salt and then stir. That was seven years of my life and it was really great. I was proud of that show.
So, she wasn’t asked at first, because they assumed she’d be too busy, and when they finally did ask her—she was too busy. There’s a lesson to be learned here, folks! If you want something, ask! The worst thing you’ll hear is “no.” After all, no one is “too busy” for something they really want to do—they make time. Sookie was one of the most underserved characters on Gilmore Girls toward the end. Here’s hoping that the revival does go beyond one season so that some of that can be remedied!
That said, how do you think they’ll explain her absence? Tell us in the comments below!
