This Metal Gear Solid Fan Is Getting a Bionic Arm From Konami
And it's all thanks to something called the Phantom Limb Project.
This is pretty darn cool.
To provide a little backstory first—those of you familiar with the storyline in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain may recall that the character of Snake wakes up from a coma to learn that he’s the new recipient of a bionic arm. With that in mind, video game company Konami has chosen to partner with the Alternative Limb Project to form the Phantom Limb Project. The goal is to develop and build a prosthetic limb for gamer and fan James Young, who lost his arm and leg in an accident.
Young was hand-picked for the project based on his love of video games, according to Phantom Limb Project manager Su-Yina Farmer. Although Young only has one arm, it hasn’t stopped him from finding a way to avidly play video games; he’s actually figured out how to game one-handed, using his mouth to control one of the thumb-sticks.
While the team will definitely be inspired by the look of Snake’s bionic limb in Metal Gear Solid, they also want to create something that will reflect Young’s personality while allowing him to play video games with both hands and perform other everyday activities.
If you want to track the progress of the Phantom Limb Project, you can check out their blog here; they’re also planning to release a documentary on the project next year.
And as for James Young? By January 2016, he’ll be officially fitted with his brand-new Metal Gear Solid arm.
