Miley Cyrus Twerks on Important News Stories So You’ll Pay Attention to Them
Don't you know you're only allowed to talk about what other people on the Internet think is important?
As everyone knows, it’s impossible to think about pop culture and foreign news at the same time. Luckily, people keep pointing out that talking about Miley Cyrus’s VMA performance makes us all bad people. Real news is happening! What will it take to get you to stop talking about twerking start tweeting about Syria? What it Miley twerks on Syria?
In all seriousness, the stories highlighted in the Miley Twerking on Things We Should Talk About Tumblr — which, as the name suggests, features Miley twerking on news — are incredibly important to know about. Certainly they deserve more coverage in the United States than the VMAs currently get, and right now they barely get any. In fact, the amount of foreign news coverage in America has dropped dramatically over the past few decades, and that’s a huge problem. No one is denying that fact.
However, all that doesn’t necessarily mean that we should just completely ignore cultural events like this, because the stuff that “shocks” a nation can often be indicative of very sinister and pervasive issues in our society. In fact, plenty of talented writers across the Internet have already penned some really insightful pieces about Miley’s awful cultural appropriation at the expense of black people in America, or how some of the Media’s reaction fed into really terribly sexist tropes about women.
Ignoring Miley in particular to focus solely on Syria isn’t going to make those problems go away, so piping up on opinion pieces to say generically condemning stuff like “Why are we paying so much attention to this when there’s a WAR going on?” isn’t at all helpful. Don’t assume that the person you’re complaining to isn’t also invested in that story as well.
Right, I’m going to get off my soapbox. Here’s Miley twerking on some news, courtesy of this Tumblr. You’re welcome.
