Misty Knight’s Uninformed Afro Podcast Set to Give Comics’ Black Superheroines Their Due

Recommended Videos

When we talk about things like representation in comics, it’s very easy to focus exclusively on what’s not there. Equally important, however, is celebrating (and sometimes reminding ourselves!) of what is there and what has been there all along! Powerful black superheroines in comics are not new. Rather, they often don’t get the coverage or conversation they deserve, despite their long, rich histories. Misty Knight’s Uninformed Afro is looking to change that.

From Jamie Broadnax, creator of Black Girl Nerds. and Stephanie Williams, who hosts The Lemonade Show, comes a brand new weekly podcast called Misty Knight’s Uninformed Afro. The show is dedicated exclusively to the discussion of the black female superhero and seeks to carve a new landscape in the podcast genre as well as produce content about an often overlooked and underserved fanbase. Check out the video above to hear Broadnax describe what listeners can expect from the show!

“I wanted to take podcasting to another level with having a fun, yet informative discussion about Black superheroines,” says Broadnax. “We incorporate media clips as well as reference specific comic issues with titles, dates, and creators behind each book discussed. We’re here to shed light on these women in a way that hasn’t quite been done before.”

The nine-episode podcast will cover old-school characters like Storm and Misty Knight as well as newer heroines like Lunella Lafayette and Riri Williams. And from the way Broadnax describes the podcast in the above video, it sounds like it’ll be a lot of fun, focusing not just on the facts and figures related these characters and their creators, but talking about their looks over the years, and posing hypotheticals like Would you go out on a ‘Girls’ Night Out’ with this heroine? (Um, if we’re talking about the Dora Milaje, then YES, because if they get to be “off the clock” enough to even have a Girls’ Night Out, you know they would party hard!)

Misty Knight’s Uninformed Afro hits podcast streams everywhere February 1. Wanna make sure you don’t miss the first episode? You can subscribe on Soundcloud, iTunes, and Stitcher, and keep tabs on all their goings on via Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

We’ll be listening! Will you?
