Are you guys as excited as I am that Ronon Dex is returning to Atlantis? After DC announced their new film slate for the next six years, they also confirmed that Jason Momoa would be their Aquaman. Now, Momoa has some things to say about the endlessly-maligned character to which he will no doubt bring the excellence.

Speaking at Walker Stalker Con in Atlanta this past weekend, Momoa spilled some ocean tea about how he got the super part—which he says will likely start shooting in 2016 or 2017.

“Listen, I was asked to play it. You know, you audition and stuff like that, but the fact is you’ve just got to keep it quiet. You know what I mean, I was just trying to respect Warner Bros. and everyone’s wishes. I’m really, really happy that I don’t have to be quiet anymore, because that’s really hard for me.”

When asked about how he’s preparing to play the part of a guy who can telepathically communicate with animals, Momoa said, “I’ve rode some dolphins before, so I can pull on that.”

But Momoa did elaborate to say that he can draw on both his education and his family history for role inspiration.

I did go to school for Marine Biology, but the cool thing is… the greatest thing for me is that Polynesians, our gods, Kahoali, Maui, all these water gods, so it’s really cool and a honor to be playing a [water] character. And there’s not too many brown superheroes, so I’m really looking forward to representing the Polynesians, the natives.

My family are some of the greatest water men on earth. I’m not, but I’m going to go train with them. But it’s really an honor just being a Polynesian. And water is the most important thing in this world and we all know it. It’s cool be a part of DC’s universe. I’m really excited to be with Warner Bros., and hopefully everyone likes it. And Zack Snyder’s a genius, so I’m really excited to be hanging out with him.

Genius? Well, let’s move on.

Though he was more of a fan of Spawn and Lobo growing up, Momoa said that he’s prepared to do lots of research in lead-up to the film. Personally, I think his work on Baywatch

and North Shore

was basically just like preparing for Aquaman anyways.

Momoa doesn’t know anything about who will be directing, but he did say that he’s going to be involved with the Justice League film that comes out in 2017. He said he believes that Aquaman would be an origin story (which might be kind of odd if Aquaman is already in Justice League, but, okay), but he honestly has no idea beyond the fact that he “can go save the frickin’ universe with [his] trident.”

And in terms of the spandex outfit? Momoa said, “You should use your imagination. I’ve got green eyes so [it’s] going to highlight my green eyes.”
