Rise of the Planet of the Apes? Monkey Mob Attacks Indonesian Town, Injuring Seven People

Recommended Videos

In a scene straight out of a horror movie, a mob of wild monkeys emerged from a forest in Indonesia and rampaged through a nearby village, leaving seven villagers injured, including one 16-year-old boy in critical condition after being badly bitten. Details on exactly what kind of monkeys made up the mob or what could have motivated them to attack are scarce, and it’s not known yet if the primates are hyper-intelligent test subjects recently escaped from a shadowy government lab — or just a bunch of jerks.

Witnesses said the mob of monkeys — again, it’s not clear yet what species — was at least ten strong, and emerged from the Toddang Lowa forest seemingly intent on doing damage to the village of Toddang Pulu in Indonesia’s South Sulawesi province. While residents are used to dealing with monkeys on a regular basis due to their close proximity to the forest, this sudden invasion — which the AP  characterized as a “surprise attack” — came as an unprecedented shock.

The attack, which saw monkeys entering homes to wreak havoc and injure residents, was seemingly unprovoked. While indigenous tribes in the area still use the nearby forest where the monkeys make their home for rituals, a local government spokesman denied that any damage was done to the monkey’s habitat, and was at a loss to explain why 10 monkeys would just stroll into a village and start wrecking up the joint.

It would appear at first glance that while the old maxim that “ape shall never kill ape” holds, roughing up humans may now be a negotiable point for the world’s primates.
