4chan Founder Chris “Moot” Poole Apparently Hired by Google

In a blog post Monday, 4chan founder Chris “Moot” Poole revealed a major career development, writing:

Today I’m excited to announce that I’ve joined Google.

When meeting with current and former Googlers, I continually find myself drawn to their intelligence, passion, and enthusiasm — as well as a universal desire to share it with others. I’m also impressed by Google’s commitment to enabling these same talented people to tackle some of the world’s most interesting and important problems.

I can’t wait to contribute my own experience from a dozen years of building online communities, and to begin the next chapter of my career at such an incredible company.

Given Poole’s past criticism of Google, many people were understandably skeptical about his claims to be joining the company. However, the hire was seemingly confirmed by Google’s Bradley Horowitz.

Poole, who founded 4chan at 15 and served as “sole administrator, decision maker, and keeper of most of its institutional knowledge” for more than a decade, stepped down from the site January 2015. His newest gig has drawn criticism both from those who see Poole’s Google job as him ‘selling out’, and people concerned that Google didn’t take into account 4chan’s history of misogyny and general wretchedness in deciding to work with the controversial community’s founder.

Thoughts, friends?
