I Dare You to Request the Cantina Theme at This Mos Eisley-Themed Pop-Up Bar in LA
Nobata tu tu muuni muuni~
Every bit of me has some fairly high hopes for this pop-up Star Wars cantina-themed experience. But within that hope lies a very real worry about whether or not I can endure the utter earworm of a song that is the “Cantina Theme.” As Nerdist reports, an immersive experience is coming to Los Angeles (Hollywood, to be specific) that’s themed after the Mos Eisley cantina in A New Hope. Dubbed the “Scum and Villainy Cantina,” it’ll be an immersive environment likely outfitted to the nines in Star Wars theming. Whether that includes the aforementioned cantina theme or not has yet to be revealed, though let’s be honest, there’s no way they don’t play it. Or! Or. Maybe we’ll be lucky enough to get the Lin-Manuel Miranda version of the cantina song they played in The Force Awakens. That’d be perfectly fine with me, thank you very much.
Details regarding what will be there, however, remain scarce. Guests are allowed to book reservations in two hour blocks, with open seating for non-reservation holders opening up for the bar’s last three hours of operation each night. And since I know you’re going to ask: yes, costumes are encouraged, so yes, you were fully justified in spending all that money on a movie-quality replica of a Jedi robe. Great job, Padawan.
The setup reminds me of how speakeasy-style bars are run. For example, the Bourbon and Branch bar in San Francisco has a similar setup in that you create a reservation, you’re given a password, and this gets you into the bar where you’ll have a table for your group. The entire thing is speakeasy themed, complete with secret bookshelf access to a bar that’s open to the general public. There’s also another secret bar attached to it. I’m not sure if the “Scum and Villainy Cantina” will be quite so secretive with its entry process, but it stands to reason that what you get will likely be very similar.
“Each reservation at the Scum and Villainy Cantina includes two drinks of your choice, a souvenir pint glass, a Scum and Villainy challenge coin, and other surprises,” explains the report. The challenge coin has a benefit to it as well in that it allows you entry during open seating hours over the run of the pop-up free of charge, implying that there’s a cover for those open hours.
I’m champing at the bit for a few more details, as I’d really like to know if there’s a theater or play aspect to the pop-up, as it all seems a bit much to only have a(n admittedly) themed bar. I certainly don’t expect Secret Cinema-levels of theatrics, but the setting is absolutely ripe for stories.
If you’re hungry for details, too, you can keep abreast of the latest scuttlebutt on their Facebook page.
