MTV Greenlights Their Shannara Season, Taps This Summer’s TMNT Reboot Director to Exec Produce
Shannabunga!
“Oh, cool, that Shannara series MTV was considering got picked up. Not a lot of info yet… wait, who’d they get to run this thing?” It’s not the Transformers: Age of Extinction writer co-producing a live-action Dumbo movie, but it’s weird.
(Yes, I know the pic I used is from the Shannara computer game, not one of the books, but it speaks to me on a deep emotional level.)
In a quest to get in on that Game of Thrones action, MTV has given a ten-episode series order to Shannara, based on Terry Brooks’ classic fantasy series of the same name. As was previously rumored, MTV will start with the second book in the series, The Elfstones of Shannara.
Something has changed from what we previously heard, however. Originally Iron Man director John Favreau was going to executive produce and direct a few episodes. Only it turns out Favreau’s an insanely busy man, so Jonathan Liebesman, director of Battle Los Angeles, Wrath of the Titans, and this summer’s Michael Bay-produced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles remake, will be taking over—though Entertainment Weekly does note that Favreau will be retaining his executive producer credit. Liebesman will also be directing the first two episodes. Smallville showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar, who were attached from the beginning, are still executive producers, as are Brooks and Dan Farah (whose company Farah Films is also producing the The Crow remake, by the way).
Shannara fans—your day for a TV show has come. Reactions?
