Muppet Babies Returns to Television With Disney Junior Show

Recommended Videos

Do you remember Muppet Babies? Yeah, sure you do. It was that cartoon from back in the 80s that featured the Muppets as babies. I know, difficult concept to grasp. Anyway, it’s apparently coming back to be rebooted for Disney Junior, the kid-oriented Disney channel.

According to sources close to ToughPigs, a Muppets fansite, the show is already in pre-production, and will feature computer generated animation. As well, they have what seem to be character breakdowns of the primary cast, which would include Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo the Great, Animal, and a new character, Bobbi Baba. Also returning is Miss Nanny, the one character on the Muppet Babies who is heard but never seen–aside from her striped stockings and shoes.

In a statement provided to TVLine, Nancy Kanter, Executive Vice President of Original Programming and General Manager of Disney Junior Worldwide said:

We are proud, and a little bit giddy, to begin production on our new version of the much-loved Muppet Babies. Parents will delight in seeing their favorite Muppets in the mixed animation style they remember from the original series, and kids will be introduced to this warm and zany world made just right for the Disney Junior audience.

As well, they provided an interesting first look at the computer-generated characters.

Something I loved about the Muppet Babies cartoon was how it was able to take pop culture of the time and incorporate it into really imaginative plots–well, as far as children’s cartoon plots go, I guess. I specifically remember episodes based on Back to the Future and Indiana Jones. There were also plenty of great references to moments of the 80s. It was well done, and I’m super curious to see if that might hold over here, too.

All the same, it seems Muppets are getting something of a revival. Between this and the return of Fraggle Rock and Sesame Street to HBO, it seems like now’s a really good time to be a Muppet.
