Set Pictures Reveal Nathan Fillion’s Role in Guardians of the Galaxy 2
Mighty spoiler-y.
Big damn spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 to follow!
Guardians of the Galaxy is currently shooting in Atlanta, and a local bystander took some pictures of the set, including a movie theater marquee advertising the “Simon Williams Film Festival” above some posters featuring Nathan Fillion’s handsome mug.
In the comics, Simon Williams is Wonder Man, an Avenger who eventually retires from the superhero game and applies his extraordinary reflexes, strength, and stamina to a career in Hollywood. It’s impossible to say from these images how significant Wonder Man or this location will be in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, but since, as Comic Alliance points out, one of the posters is advertising what appears to be an Iron Man biopic, it seems like this scene might be more than just a flashback to Peter Quill’s childhood on Earth. Since Peter left in 1988, barring time travel shenanigans, it wouldn’t have made sense chronologically for an Iron Man biopic to have been released when Peter was a kid.
A video posted to Facebook yesterday revealed that the Simon Williams Festival might be part of a larger plot point in which a ship crashes on Earth:
Fillion’s cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy was extremely subtle, so I suspect we won’t see much of him in the sequel, either; these posters might be all the Wonder Man we’re getting. I’d love to have more Fillion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but his Guardians appearances are more likely to be about quality than quantity—regardless, I am Groot hype.
It’s definitely intriguing to see that scenes of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 will take place on Earth (or a planet that looks a lot like it). Care to speculate what’s in store for Star-Lord and the Gang?
