NBC Makes Us Happy By Bringing Us Two Female-Led Comedies from Tina Fey and Mike Schur
NBC knows what we want (more women on TV, ahem), and they’re going to be giving it two us next season in the form of two new comedies by two of TV’s top creators!
At their TCA summer session recently, NBC announced that we have two new shows to look forward to from two of our favorite TV writers. First up, the always-awesome Tina Fey (who apparently has time for another show on top of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt) along with Tracey Wigfield (30 Rock, The Mindy Project) is bringing us an as-yet-untitled show that, according to Pajiba, is a “slightly autobiographical comedy about an up-and-coming millennial woman working at a cable news network where her meddling mother gets a job.” Mother-daughter comedy? I’m sold. Especially with Fey and Wigfield steering the ship. The show is only shooting a pilot right now, but…come on! It’s Tina freaking Fey. Also, NBC “didn’t feel confident” about Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt before it went to Netflix. They’re not going to make that same mistake again.
But it isn’t only women who can tell female-led stories (nor should it be!). Mike Schur, creator of The Office, Parks and Rec, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, is bringing us a new comedy called A Good Place, about “a woman wrestling with what it means to be good.” That’s all the info there is right now, but as I love the women Schur has created on his previous shows, I have no doubt that this will be something I want to watch.
Hearing news like this come out of the TCA tour gives me a lot of hope for television. Which of these are you most excited to see?
