In Netflix’s Bright Teaser, Will Smith Polices a Fantastical Alt-World
Orcs and elves and fairies, oh my.
Netflix reportedly paid $90 million for Bright, the David Ayer-helmed film that features both hard-bitten cops and flighty fairies. Now we have a first look at the supernatural creatures—and Will Smith with sword in hand.
A two-week bidding war and a massive payout brought Bright to Netflix, as the streaming service seeks to go big with their original cinematic programming. Bright is penned by Max Landis (Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency), directed by Suicide Squad’s Ayer, and stars Smith as the (presumably human) LAPD cop Ward and Joel Edgerton (The Gift) as his orc partner, Jakoby.
In the teaser, we get glimpses of what looks like a darkly dystopian police state, a very angry creature with a very big gun, some trippy elves, and a whole host of odd magical imagery set to the folksy sounds of Woody Guthrie.
These days it seems like we’re full-up with alternative dystopian narratives (while we struggle with our own real-life version), but the gritty modern setting mingled with fantasy tropes shows some promise.
