Here’s the Dream Team Working on Netflix’s Castlevania Series

Recommended Videos

Netflix has announced a heck of a lot of new programming this past week, and we’re pretty freakin’ excited about all of it. There’s the much-needed Netflix series adaptation of Dear White People, there’s an incredible and haunting trailer for the second season of Stranger Things, there’s the awesome weirdness that is The OA getting a second season, there’s the news that Anton Yelchin recorded enough voice acting ahead of his passing to be featured in future episodes of Netflix’s Trollhunters… and, really, I’m only scratching the surface here. Here’s the frosting on the cake: Netflix has also announced they’ll be adapting Magic School Bus and tapping Kate McKinnon to play Ms. Frizzle. Could we be any more hyped up about having Netflix subscriptions, lately???

Turns out, YES. Buried in that long list of announcements was this fun piece of news: Netflix is also going to be bringing us a Castlevania animated series. And it’s not just any Castlevania animated series! This is a series that’s been in the works for ages, and now it’s finally found a home at Netflix.

Last December, Charline wrote up the rumors about the show, which is being produced by Adi Shankar, who has been posting some pretty funny and cryptic Facebook statuses about the project for a while now. He posted this one over a year ago:

That old post is probably just a joke, although the existence of the Castlevania series is definitely NOT a joke. Here’s a post that Shankar put up yesterday about the TV show:

In that more recent status, I think Shankar is referring to the skeptical comments on this AV Club article about the upcoming series. He also reveals that not only is Warren Ellis serving as a co-producer on the series, Ellis also wrote both seasons 1 and 2 — and, apparently, season 1 will be coming out in 2017, and season 2 will drop in 2018.

Shankar’s most recent Facebook status also includes a mention Kevin Kolde, who is the producer of Adventure Time and Bee and Puppycat. Shankar’s previous status also mentioned Kolde, as well as Fred Seibert, who is the founder of Frederator Studios (also behind Adventure Time and Bee and Puppycat). Seibert was the person who propagated last December’s rumors about the Castlevania series, at which time he mentioned that his studio would be involved in the project. Seems like that’s still the case, although I’m sure the project has changed a bit in the past year or so.

So, basically, this is going to be a mash-up of amazing creative talents. I mean, I guess there’s a chance that this TV show could turn out to be bad… But with a dream team like that, it’s pretty darn unlikely. Glad to hear it’s found a home on Netflix!
