Netflix’s Series of Unfortunate Events Finds Director and Showrunner

Dearest Beatrice, I am so excited.

Netflix and Daniel Handler/Lemony Snicket announced the terrible, terrible news that they were re-adaptating A Series of Unfortunate Events not too long ago, and now they’ve found a director and showrunner that make me hopeful for an amazing Bad Beginning.

Barry Sonnenfeld (The Addams Family, Men in Black) will direct and True Blood‘s Mark Hudis will be the showrunner. By “showrunner” I’m not sure if this means Hudis will be Count Olaf or whether the narrator he’ll be Snicket himself. Both are executive producers for the series.

Sonnenfeld was originally signed to direct the 2004 version, but left because of budgeting concerns. I think his filmography (like cinematography for 1990’s Misery) makes him a pretty great choice for capturing the menace and tone of the book series. Thoughts?
