Wonderful Cinnamon Roll Guillermo Del Toro Refuses to Give Up on Pacific Rim 2
Never give up, never surrender.
Pac Rim 2 cancelled? Don’t believe everything you read. It’s still going and I’ll remain w it in one way or another!

I’m not sure how much more my heart can take. I mean, it sucks seeing Pacific Rim 2 announced, then cancelled, then announced, then cancelled, then… you get the picture. But it’s the thought of the wonderful Guillermo del Toro’s relentless optimism and hope in the face of denial that really fills my heart to bursting.
About a week ago, it was reported that Pacific Rim 2 was “off the table” at Universal, essentially declaring it dead in the water. Despite that, del Toro took to Twitter to suggest that we shouldn’t believe everything we hear, breathing a bit of life back into the hope that we’ll get to spend some more time with our favorite cinnamon rolls Mako Mori and Raleigh Becket.
The worry right now is that because of Crimson Peak‘s relatively disappointing domestic performance, it’s possible Universal isn’t willing to take the risk of handing over more money for another blockbuster movie. Additionally, despite how we all might feel about it, Pacific Rim was also a domestic box office disappointment. It bears mentioning that when taking into account the worldwide box office take, they each made plenty of money. However, it’s still pretty easy to see where Universal might be coming from if it is true that it’s off the table there.
Don’t get me wrong. I want to see this movie happen. More than (almost) anything, I want to see Pacific Rim 2. Del Toro’s eye for detail and absolutely fantastic stories makes me so happy. Just like with The Force Awakens‘ Jess Pava, it’s absolutely magical to see an Asian woman taking the lead in a fun sci-fi flick. Everyone should have the opportunity to play in that world again.
Frankly, if anyone’s capable of canceling the cancellation of the apocalypse, it’s del Toro. As long as he has hope, we’ve got hope, too.
Speaking of canceling the apocalypse, it seems del Toro has some real deus ex machina (read: knows things we don’t) powers: Legendary, the studio behind Pacific Rim, was just recently acquired by Chinese group Wanda for $3.5 billion. Given the fact that Pacific Rim made triple internationally of what it made domestically–with the majority of that profit coming from China and Japan–it’s likely they could push to have Pacific Rim 2 made.
One battle a time, friends. Reset the clock.
