Meet the Non-Edgar Wright People Who Might Direct Ant-Man Now
If you liked it then you should have put a Lantern Ring on it
I wrote a joke piece for Pajiba on directors who could replace Edgar Wright on Ant-Man, but unfortunately none of the ones I picked are on Marvel Studios’ rumored shortlist. What’s wrong, Marvel? You don’t want Peter Jackson to direct a version of Ant-Man that’s 99% scenery porn shots? You’re missing out.
The source of this shortlist is the lovely anonymous sources at The Hollywood Reporter. Their shortlist of rumored Doctor Strange directors was shot down by Marvel (though THR could still be proven right for all we know, as no director’s been chosen for the as-yet-not-officially-announced film), so gather a dark cloak of skepticism around your heart for this one. The names “among a group of directors that are meeting with the studio to replace Edgar Wright” are might be:
- Adam McKay (Anchorman, Talladega Nights, Step Brothers, Eastbound & Down)
- Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, 30 Minutes or Less, Gangster Squad)
- Rawson Marshall Thurber (We’re the Millers, Dodgeball)
Part of me is still being a giant toddler about the Edgar Wright departure, sitting in the corner with a pout on my face and my special edition DVD of Hot Fuzz clutched to my bosom because nothing else is ever going to work, nothing! Another part is trying to be a (jaded, bitter) adult about the whole situation, because we’re getting this movie no matter what, and if it won’t be a Wright production, at least it could still be good.
To that end, I’d be OK with McKay, I guess. I have no idea what a superhero movie by the director of Step Brothers (“It’s the f*cking Catalina Wine Mixer.”) would look like, but I know I want to see that movie. Fleischer was riding high after Zombieland, but the critical response to the movies he’s come out with since has been only mediocre, and I can personally say the only reason Gangster Squad is worth watching is that Anthony Mackie is in it. (Which is a pretty big reason, because Anthony Mackie, but the movie as a whole sucks.) And Thurber… eh. Which probably means if we get one of those guys, it’ll be him.
Sigh. The post-Edgar Wright Ant-Man ennui. It’s a killer.
